Artificial Scout Climbing and Abseiling Training

Climb When Ready delivered an Artificial Scout Climbing and Abseiling training session today, focused on developing the technical, safety, and instructional skills required for delivering climbing activities in a scouting environment.

The course concentrated on key competencies including the correct selection and fitting of personal protective equipment, rope handling, belaying techniques, system setup and checks, and safe abseil rigging. Participants also developed skills in effective communication, supervision, and group management at height, all essential for leading climbing and abseiling activities safely on artificial structures.

The course was facilitated by James, Sean, Vicki, Smiley, and Alaric, who supported and guided trainees throughout the sessions. Their facilitation ensured consistent application of best practice, clear demonstration of techniques, and structured opportunities for trainees to practice and receive feedback.

The trainee instructors attending the course demonstrated growing competence in both technical systems and instructional delivery. The training also focused on developing observational skills, correcting technique, managing risk dynamically, and maintaining safe operating procedures during live activity scenarios.

All trainee instructors have now begun their journey towards obtaining climbing permits, marking an important step in their formal development. This training contributes to building a capable and confident instructor base to support the continued delivery of safe, high-quality climbing and abseiling activities in West Sussex Scouts through Climb When Ready.
